Forestry Days 2025

We had over 200 people participate in Forestry Days 2025 last week! K-12 students from Orofino, Nez Perce, Clearwater Valley, Genesee, Potlatch, Deary, Troy, St Maries, Calder / Avery and many home school families came out to learn about forestry. They chose from over 20 hands-on activities led by industry and agency stakeholders including Idaho Dept. of Lands, PotlatchDeltic, Bennett Lumber, Idaho Forest Group, Stella-Jones, Columbia Cedar, Pape Machinery, Western States Cat, Modern Machinery, Pine Creek Logging, James Larsen Trucking, Triple B Excavation, Jodi Hendrickx Logging and many others. So fun seeing all these future foresters, loggers and forest scientists planting trees, grading lumber, digging fireline and so many other hands-on tasks! #uidahocnr, #universityofidaho #forestproud #careerreadystudents

Western Area Map Librarians Tour on UIEF!

On Saturday September 29 we’ll host the Western Area Map Libraries Annual (WAML) Meeting for a UIEF field tour and visit to the Potlatch Historical Society and Railroad Depot. Dr. Bruce Godfrey, Geospatial Librarian for the University of Idaho, has worked very closely with the UIEF over the last 3 years to help develop the UIEF 4.0 interface that balances digitization and georeferencing of historic UIEF maps with access to emerging remote sensing data and real-time spatial data from our forest management operations. WAML will tour the UIEF with geospatial tools on mobile devices to see first-hand how the UI Library and UIEF are leading the nation integrating geospatial data into shared research and teaching data platforms for UIEF users.

Mobile recreation map online

From the ‘Maps’ tab above, you can now click on the UIEF Non-Motorized Recreation Map wherever you have service on your mobile device. Clicking ‘My location’ will bring up a blue dot and center the map to show where you are on the forest along with trail locations, viewpoints, etc. In the future, this map will show current trail maintenance, grooming for XC skiing, etc. Enjoy!

Bird species data on ebird

Looking for information on bird species present on the UIEF to support new research and teaching projects? Ebird is an online forum that allows users to upload reports as they recreate on the UIEF. As part of our management plan under the Tree Farm program, we intentionally manage for a wide range of stand structures on the landscape by using a mix of silvicultural systems. You might be surprised how many bird species we have. Take a look at the West Hatter unit records here: https://ebird.org/hotspot/L2744118/bird-list

New web address!

This is our new home for regularly web content related to the University of Idaho Experimental Forest! Recently the University has simplified its overall web design. As part of the redesign effort, individual faculty and units have increased flexibility to maintain the content for individual units. As the UIEF continues to grow, being able to manage our own site content provides a great opportunity to connect more directly with our different user groups, whether providing up to date recreation information to the public, sharing updated research data links for faculty, staff and student researchers, publishing new online maps, or getting the word out about upcoming events. It’s also a great way to highlight the wood products our students make from start to finish as part of hands-on experiential learning about forestry and forest products the College of Natural Resources!

Done!

We finished processing the last log on our Student Logging unit and got it in the deck at 3 PM on the Friday before classes start! Amazing work by our staff this summer. It’s been hot and dusty but what a great view! Now moving onto the next unit on Monday.
